Walmart announced it is continuing to expand delivery operations from Express Delivery and InHome to include more drone services.

Walmart's DroneUp delivery network is expanding to 34 sites across six states including Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Utah and Virginia. The company says the drone program will provide it with the ability to deliver over 1 million packages by drone in a year.

Between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., Walmart said customers will be able to order thousands of eligible items, such as Tylenol, diapers and hot dog buns, for delivery by air in 30 minutes. For a delivery fee of $3.99, customers can order items totaling up to 10 pounds, according to the company.

With this planned expansion, Walmart could take the lead when it comes to commercial drone delivery in the US. The Wall Street Journal reports that while companies like FedEx and UPS are looking into drones, they’re currently more in the experimentation stage rather than the “offering it as a service phase.” Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is operating a drone delivery service called Wing in Texas and Virginia, and it’s delivered hundreds of thousands of packages worldwide, but it currently hasn’t announced further expansion plans.

Participating stores will house a DroneUp delivery hub which will include a team of certified pilots, operating within FAA guidelines, to manage flight operations for deliveries within roughly a mile of the store.

Drone deliveries have already been available in some areas of Arkansas including Farmington since November of last year.
